Som Tam is a spicy and tangy Thai salad made with green papaya, tomatoes, carrots, and a variety of herbs and spices. It's a popular street food dish that's often served with sticky rice.

Ingredients:

  • 1 unripe green papaya, shredded
  • 2 tomatoes, quartered
  • 1 carrot, shredded
  • 1/2 cup dried shrimp
  • 1 tablespoon tamarind paste
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup roasted peanuts, chopped
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the dressing: In a small bowl, combine tamarind paste, fish sauce, lime juice, chili powder, and sugar. Stir until well combined.
  2. Combine ingredients: In a large bowl, add shredded papaya, tomatoes, carrots, dried shrimp, and roasted peanuts.
  3. Toss and serve: Pour the dressing over the ingredients and toss to coat. Serve immediately with fresh cilantro as a garnish.

Tips:

  • Adjust the spice level: For a milder version, reduce the amount of chili powder.
  • Add more crunch: Add a handful of crushed peanuts or cashews for extra texture.
  • Serve with sticky rice: Som tam is often served with sticky rice for a complete meal.
